Diagnose slow home Wi-Fi

Separate the internet connection, router, radio coverage and one-device problems before buying new equipment.

Estimated time: 20–45 minutesUpdated: 27 September 2026

Step by step

  1. Measure a baseline

Run the same speed or download test near the router on two devices and note time, band and whether another device is heavily using the connection.

  2. Compare wired and wireless if possible

A wired test helps separate provider or router uplink performance from Wi-Fi coverage and interference. Use a known-good cable and port.

  3. Map the weak area

Test at the problem location and halfway back to the router. Note walls, floors, appliances and whether 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz is used.

  4. Change one variable

Restart once, update router firmware through the official interface, move the router into the open, or choose a cleaner channel. Test after each change.

Ready-to-use checklist

  • Baseline repeated on two devices
  • Wired comparison attempted
  • Location and band recorded
  • Heavy usage ruled out
  • One change tested at a time
  • Router admin password protected

Common problems

Only one device is slow

Check that device’s updates, power-saving settings, VPN, background downloads and network reset options before changing the whole network.

Wired speed is also poor

Check provider status, modem signal and plan limits; collect test times and results before contacting support.
