Family & Relationships guide

Create a family emergency information sheet

Put essential contacts, medical notes and practical instructions in one place without exposing more personal data than necessary.

Estimated time: 30–45 minutesUpdated: 27 September 2026

Step by step

  1. Define likely users

Decide who may need the sheet: household members, a trusted relative, school contact or carer. Create different versions if not everyone needs the same details.

  2. Record actionable information

Include emergency contacts, GP and pharmacy details, allergies, essential medicines, school or care contacts, utility shut-off locations and agreed meeting points.

  3. Protect sensitive details

Do not include passwords, bank PINs or unnecessary identity documents. Store a sealed paper copy and a protected digital copy with controlled access.

  4. Practise one scenario

Confirm that each person knows where the sheet is, who to call and what to do if phones are unavailable or the home cannot be entered.

Ready-to-use checklist

  • Emergency contacts verified
  • Allergies and medicines current
  • Meeting point agreed
  • Sensitive data minimised
  • Paper and protected digital copies stored
  • Review date added

Common problems

Children need a simpler version

Use names, trusted phone numbers, address and one clear meeting instruction; practise without frightening detail.

Information changes frequently

Assign one owner and review after new medication, school, address, carer or contact details.
