Walk around the vehicle
Look for fresh fluid, body damage, obstacles, insecure loads and tyres that appear low, cut or damaged.
Check visibility and lights
Clean windows, mirrors, lamps and number plates. Confirm lights and indicators work, especially before darkness or poor weather.
Check tyres properly
Use the handbook or vehicle label for cold pressures. UK rules require the correct tread and tyres free of cuts and defects; cars and light vans require at least 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters around the whole tyre.
Check controls after starting
Confirm warning lights behave normally, brakes feel effective and steering is normal before joining traffic.

Common problems
A red warning remains on
