Step by step
Identify the plant and exposure
Check hardiness, minimum temperature, wind exposure and whether the pot is raised or against a warm wall. Roots in pots are more exposed than roots in the ground.
Move what can be moved
Place vulnerable pots in a sheltered bright location appropriate to the plant. Group containers while keeping air movement around foliage.
Protect pot and drainage
Insulate the container, lift it from freezing surfaces and keep drainage holes clear. Avoid waterlogging before a freeze.
Use temporary plant cover correctly
Apply horticultural fleece before the coldest period and secure it without crushing growth. Remove or ventilate when conditions improve.

Common problems
The compost is frozen solid
Do not force water into frozen compost or move brittle frozen growth. Wait for thaw and reassess moisture.
A sunny morning follows frost
Keep vulnerable plants out of sudden harsh sun while frozen tissue thaws gradually.
