Step by step
Identify the wall and the load
Work out whether the surface is plasterboard, masonry, tile or another material. Weigh the item and use a fixing rated for both load and substrate.
Check the whole drilling zone
Look for sockets, switches, taps, radiators and pipe routes on both sides of the wall. Use a suitable detector and never assume a straight line is clear.
Consider hazardous material
In older buildings, drilling can disturb asbestos-containing materials. If material is unknown or suspicious, stop and obtain competent advice before disturbing it.
Control the drill
Wear appropriate eye protection, use the correct bit, start without hammer mode where suitable and stop if resistance or dust changes unexpectedly.

Common problems
The detector gives inconsistent readings
Do not drill. Recheck from different directions and obtain professional help if the route remains uncertain.
Suspected asbestos is exposed
Stop work immediately, keep people away and follow HSE guidance. Do not sweep, sand or use an ordinary vacuum.
