Step by step
Choose what is irreplaceable
List photos, documents, contacts, device configuration and work files that would cause real loss or disruption. Include files stored outside the obvious Documents folder.
Use a separate location
Choose reputable cloud storage, removable media or both. A copy that remains on the same device is not protection from loss, theft or device failure.
Automate where possible
Turn on scheduled backup or sync, check storage capacity and understand whether deletion on one device also deletes the cloud copy.
Perform a small restore test
Open recent backed-up files and restore one test file to a different folder. Record where recovery settings and credentials are kept.

Common problems
Cloud sync is mistaken for a backup
Check version history, deleted-item retention and whether changes propagate immediately. Keep a second copy for irreplaceable data.
The backup drive stays connected
Disconnect removable media after the job so malware or accidental deletion cannot automatically affect the backup.
