Step by step
Choose an accessible site
Use a stable spot with drainage and room to add, mix and remove material. Follow local rules for shared spaces.
Add varied material
Alternate food-free garden greens and suitable kitchen scraps with dry leaves, shredded plain cardboard and small woody material.
Control moisture and air
Aim for a damp wrung-sponge feel. Add dry browns when wet and compacted; add greens or a little water when very dry. Turn or mix when practical.
Keep problem material out
Exclude meat, dairy, oils, pet waste, diseased plants and persistent weeds unless the system is designed to handle them.

Common problems
The bin smells rotten
It is likely too wet or airless. Mix in dry browns and create air spaces.
Nothing seems to happen
Add moisture if dry, mix in fresh greens and reduce oversized material; cold conditions slow the process.
